Book a Spy Session® to Get Beautiful, True Candid Photography of You and Your Loved Ones

So. You know how you always wanted really nice photos of you and your family? Not really posed, more like just…hanging out together. Just being you. Even way before I became a photographer, and especially when my daughter was really little, I always wanted to hire a photographer for a day to follow us around and take photos of us. Playing, talking, just being together (but maybe not so much the arguing pat, of which, let’s be honest, there was a bit). I never did do that, and I never dated a photographer (number two on my list of “how to get great photos of me and my kid”) so I don’t have any of those kinds of photos. Bah.

But now, as a photographer, I do the next best thing. I do this for other people.

I’ve actually been doing it for awhile, but I never really advertised it because, I’ll be honest, it’s a bit of a hike for me 🙂 But it’s time you knew about it because the one thing I hear from almost all my clients is “I don’t like to have my picture taken.” Now I love shooting in my studio; if I could I’d do it all the time. But I also know that, for you, the idea of coming to the studio can be a wee bit intimidating. And even after you come in and see how comfy and cozy it is, when you’re standing there in front of the lights, you’re afraid that you’ll totally forget how to be yourself.

There’s always at least one family member  (maybe it’s you) who really, really, really dislikes having his/her picture taken, and who simply will not agree to photos. Or maybe it’s your kids; maybe you’re worried that they won’t behave (hint: they won’t. Nobody’s kids behave.) or sit still or look at the camera or kiss their brother or sister.

Okey dokey, then. If this sounds like you, I’ve got you covered. Several years ago I started something called the Spy Session®. Yes, it sounds a bit dodgy, but it’s totally not. It’s actually really neat. I basically follow you around a public place, like a park or a beach or someplace where there are lots of people and I won’t stick out, and I take wonderful photos of you spending time with the ones you love.

Pretty neat, huh? Since only one of you (namely, you) knows that I’m there, everyone is completely natural and themselves. You can help direct or guide the activities that you want photos of, and I’ll be there to get everyone’s genuine and true reactions. Then you end up with a set of photos that aren’t posed, but are a real reflection of who you are as a family or a couple. Pretty neat, huh?

You can have either the entire session shot as Spy, or after a certain amount of time we can come clean and tell everyone and then do a few of the more traditional kind of portraits. Either way, the Spy Session® takes the pressure off pretty much everyone, because if when you know what’s going on, there will be lots of moments that you just forget I’m there. It’s the best way, like, EVER, to get real, candid photography. I mean, how much more candid can it be than Spy?

A photographer friend of mine, Nicole, was visiting her parents in SoCal last year, and she wanted some good photos of them, but neither of them were keen on having a photographer around. So we arranged a Spy Session at the Santa Monica Pier, and after about 30-45 minutes of being surreptitiously being caught on camera, Nicole spilled the beans and I joined them. We had such a great time, I think I was even adopted. I stuck around for awhile and got some shots of them together, kind of posing, and she loved the photos. And so did her parents, and that was seriously the best part.

Here are some of Nicole’s shots; they’ll give you a good idea of what the Spy Session offers. In addition to taking pictures of you, I also take photos of the environment so you can put together a nice memory book or story board or some momento of that day. Neat, huh?

If you have an extremely camera-shy loved one (and let’s face it, we all do), drop me a line and we can talk about booking a Spy Session® for you.

Jeanie & Tom Glazier - Such a fun time. You’re the best “spy” ever. It was a perfect day to enjoy our daughter who was visiting from North Carolina. We now have candid photos with “all” of us in the frame. Couldn’t have happened with out you. Thank you Susan.ReplyCancel

susan sabo - Erica, when you’re here next week we’re not going to be able to Spy you, because I’m going to put you and Mr. Man in the studio and I’m going to keep you there as long as I can! 🙂

Hey Jeanie, Hi Tom. I’m really glad that Nicole arranged that day for you; working is always fun, but making friends during the process is better than cake. xoReplyCancel
